What it is

Kiro is an AI development environment built and operated by AWS, with a desktop IDE for macOS, Windows and Linux, a CLI, a web interface and Kiro Crew for multi-agent workflows. Its spec-driven mode turns a prompt into requirements, an architecture design and a sequence of tasks, then implements them with parallel agents, locally or in the cloud. It checks requirements for gaps and uses property-based tests to catch edge cases. An Auto mode picks models, or you can choose Claude, GPT or open-weight models.

The free tier includes 50 credits a month with open-weight models and Claude Sonnet 4.5. Pro costs $20 a month for 1,000 credits, with Pro+, Pro Max and Power tiers above it and extra credits at $0.04 each. Premium models use credits faster.

Best for

  • Planning features as written requirements before code is written
  • Teams that want specs and tests they can review
  • Developers already working with AWS
