What it is

GitHub Copilot adds inline code suggestions, chat and an agent mode to VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Neovim, Eclipse, Zed and other editors, and also works on github.com, in GitHub Mobile and in the terminal through Copilot CLI. On paid plans its cloud coding agent can take an issue, work on it in the background and open a pull request, and Copilot can review pull requests.

The free plan covers 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month, without the cloud agent or pull request reviews. Pro costs $10 a month and Pro+ $39 a month, each with matching AI credits; Pro+ can also hand tasks to third-party agents such as Claude and Codex. Business and Enterprise plans are sold through GitHub sales.

Best for

  • Adding AI help to an editor you already use
  • Teams whose code and pull requests live on GitHub
  • Handing small issues to a cloud agent that opens a pull request
