What it is

OpenCode is an MIT-licensed coding agent with a terminal interface, a desktop app and an IDE extension. It loads language servers for your project automatically, runs multiple sessions in parallel and can share a link to any session. You can sign in with GitHub Copilot or a ChatGPT Plus or Pro account, connect more than 75 providers through Models.dev, use local models, or try the free models it includes. It does not store your code or context.

The agent is free. Its maker also sells optional model access: Zen is pay-as-you-go access to models tested for coding agents, and Go is a $10 a month subscription (Go Plus is $40) for open-weight models. Quality depends heavily on the model you choose.

Best for

  • Using a Copilot or ChatGPT subscription in an open-source agent
  • Switching freely between model providers
  • Running several agents in parallel on one project
