What it is

VoiceInk types what you say into any app on a Mac. It transcribes on the computer with local models such as NVIDIA's Parakeet and OpenAI's Whisper, or with a cloud provider through your own API key, and can clean up the text with a local model, Ollama or a cloud model you connect. Modes switch the model, language and writing style by app or website. The source code is public under the GPL-3.0 license.

A license costs $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with lifetime updates, a 7-day trial and a 14-day refund. Its pricing page says it works only on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later, while its docs list macOS 15 or later and warn that local models don't run reliably on Intel Macs, so plan on an Apple silicon Mac. An iPhone app is free during its beta and needs a separate license afterward.

Best for

  • Mac users who want private dictation without a subscription
  • Dictating prompts into coding tools and chat apps
  • Setting a different writing style for each app or website
