What it is

Semantic Scholar is a free search engine for scientific literature, run by Ai2, the nonprofit Allen Institute for AI. It indexes more than 200 million papers from all fields of science, and it uses AI to extract meaning and find connections between papers. It also offers Semantic Reader, an augmented reader for some papers, and research feeds that suggest new work.

It suits students, researchers and developers. Everything is free, and its API and datasets let developers build their own scholarly tools. It is a search and discovery tool rather than a writing assistant, so it will not draft reviews or reports for you.

Best for

  • Free paper search across all fields of science
  • Following citations and authors through a field
  • Developers building on an open scholarly API
